Problems with new apartment and the landlady is never there?

We just moved into a new apartment that had originally looked nice and it was rent controlled. But withing a day of moving in we found the place was infested with roaches! I mean we hadn't even brought in any food and all our stuff was in boxes still. We did not have roaches at our last apartment. We never had roaches in the past. We complained about them fisrt thing Monday (since the office was closed over the weekend) and she gave us some pellets but the infestation is huge and its not working. I gave her a written complaint and waited three days for something to happen. On the tird day the office was mysteriously closed. Now its Monday and the office is supposed to open at nine but its almost noon and no sign of her. Its like she's avoiding us. But I am pregnant and have small children and I will not live with roaches they are dirty. What can I do besides call the health department?

The fact that it was the shower head that caused the problem makes it structural (ie: part of the apartment) and therefore the responsibility of the landlord. It's not like you had a water bed that leaked and caused the damage. It would have been better if you had told them of the problem when you moved in. Keep an eye on the floor in your bathroom to make sure it does not start to sag.

I got a call from a police officer today that my front porch had caught on fire while I wasn't home. To give you a little background, my house currently has water standing all under it, including under the front porch. The fire department said my porch was in such bad shape that it shouldn't even be walked on. I'm currently renting the house, and i have been trying to get the landlady to do some work to get this water problem fixed, but maybe this will set everything in gear.I just can't figure out how the fire started. Any thoughts? Can the saturated wood heat up and cause a fire on it's own?

Security Deposit Refund?

I signed a cob-job lease when i moved into my apartment and paid $1000 to move in (first months rent and security ($500/$500.) The lease stated that i had to give a 30 day notice when leaving my tenancy. The lease expired and i requested a new one be drawn up several months ago to no avail. I now am moving and admit i did not give sufficient notice because i found a new place really quick and had to make a deposit and what not. My notice was only like 2 weeks or so. The first thing out of my landlady's mouth is that "i know i will not get my security back right?" she says to me. Can she legally keep my whole security deposit for my not giving proper notice when the lease is over. There is nothing about month to month or anything. My landlady has not ever given back security according to the neighbors. Any advice?

How can I fix my landlord problems?

My mom and I as well as my two brothers rent a house. The landlady lives in arizona but the house she owns is in texas. Lately we have been having plumbing issues and we ask the landlady to fix them pleading really. And she only says she will but she never does. The same goes for other house problems like broken windows, electrical problems etc. The thing is they never really gave us a contract to sign so technically we aren't really renting the house. Living in an apartment complex, woman says she will tell on us for using sidewalk ?

we liv ein townhomes. the sidewalk goes in front of all our apartments and leads to the dumpster and to the playground on the other end. this old woman yelled at my 3 year old and told her she cannot use the sidewalk in front of her house. My landlady is stalling on making repairs in my apartment, what can I do?

On March 25th my studio apartment flooded from the rain, it was a Friday. The maintenance guy pulled up the carpet in my apartment that very same day so that the floor could dry. 50% of my apartment is inaccessible to me. I need to know if my husbands job is allowed to take away labor hours?

my husband works for a car care company. The manager recently told him that when he cant get a customer to agree to the work needed to fix there car, he will cut the labor time it calls for so that he can get the sale. So if the computer calls for 3 hours labor the manager is cutting it down to 1.5 hours labor. This wouldn't really be that big of deal except my husband gets paid more if he brakes base, but he cant brake base if the labor hours are cut. So i need to know if they are allowed to do this? My husband at one time used to manage that shop and was not being treated fairly so he ended up quiting and they recently called him and asked him to come back. I have in the past called wage and hour on them for shorting him on his check for a holiday. he was getting paid salary and the week for the holiday they changed his salary amount down 100. so he didn't get paid for it. They ended up having to pay it back to him, I really just need to know if this is legal and if not where can i call to complain? please any help

Speaking to an Army recruiter for the first time?

I've been doing lots of research about joining the army recently. I'm 25 and basically fed up with my career as a correctional officer, looking for some possible change. Very few jobs in the army interest me at this point in my life with the exception of military intelligence. Now based on what I've read in articles and online it seems if anything the army is downsizing, or at least is swamped with recruits. I have yet to speak with a recruiter. When I do is it wrong to basically tell him I'm only interested in a select few jobs, mainly 35M (Human Intelligence Collector) and that if I cannot have that job I'm basically not interested? From my perspective I'm giving up a good salary and my future pension (I've got 5 years in) to join the army, therefore I'm not willing to "settle" on what they have available. I would rather wait or simply not join. This may seem rude or demanding, but I'm just being very upfront, as I expect them to be with me since I view recruiters as looking out for the best interests of the military while I'm looking out for mine and my wife's best interests. Should I even bother going in to talk to him at this point?

Hi im 15 years old and i will be 16 in 19 days time, i have just finished high school and im moving on to college where i have been granted a place to train to become a plumber on a high high course for my age, considering my age this course is generally the next step up from your basics in plumbing...its an NVQ Level 2 and because i have learnt all the basics in plumbing through my dad, i was able to take part in this course. I went to the interview today and i was by far the youngest guy there, ages ranged from 18-50 so i was obviously the youngest ones. My question is, is plumbing a well paid job once qualifications are obtained and especially as im so young yet more experienced than most my age do i have the potential to be on a very high salary once i leave college? there is no chance of me messing around as everybody is matured in the class and even married therefore i will also have guidance off of older students possibly more knowledgable than me. so anyway let me know if i have a bright future if i stick to this plan and if plumbing is a well paid job, thanks.

Was I wrong to call a fireman about a hot ceiling and a bubbling sound?

Okay it went like this: I went into my daughter room and there was a bubbling sound coming from her light. I went to turn it off to see if the bubble was just bad. I got shocked by the pull chain. Then I touch the ceiling it was hot. There was no water dripping down. So the first thing that comes to mind is maybe a fire in the ceiling. Well my son if a explorer for the fire department. So I had him call someone from the fire department to look at it. Well he called one that was also a election. He looked and called for a fire truck. They put a thermal thing up to the ceiling it was 115 degrees. They used a fire extinguisher on the light and then took down the light water fell from the light. They called the landlady to let her now. I told her what had happened and that I was hopping it just wasn't something to worry about till morning. She understood and called her husband who call me to tell me he was not coming out till morning and would have not come out till morning because he was buzzy. And screamed at me for call the fireman in the first place. Now I work on computer and know a live wire can kill you. I also know that fire can hide in a ceiling, wall or room. I also know that lights don't make a bubbling sound. So was I wrong for call a fireman over to just check it out. When even he didn't want to take the light down with out back up.

I have been offered a job as Sessional Support Worker. Support Worker for this company is my ideal job so I was delighted after having been unemployed for a few months. I live in England in a rented property with my husband. We have been renting the property for the last 2 months for a contract period of 3 months with an option to continue every month with a one month notice. The property we live in is an annex attached to the landlady's house which has a seperate entrance. We were provided a cooker on request which means there was no cooker in this property before because the kitchen has a room on top of our kitchen and it is not allowed to do so. Instead the previous tenants have been sharing their kitchen. I am going to major in business administration at Community College and then I am going to transfer to a senior university to finish my bachelor's degree. This is a problem, and a major one if you plan on ever getting married to her son. It could just be the whole thing of one female starts to get defensive with another in the house. She might feel you are taking her job. In fact that is almost exactly what it sounds like, I know this from experience from an ex roommate. She thought I was moving in on her territory ( her fiancee and her cleaning the house) so she did everything she could to get her fiancee to kick me and my (at the time) two year old out. My husband and I moved into a 60-year-old house about three months ago. The house was unpainted at the time. The house is owned by a couple who own several other homes in our area. They asked if the house being unpainted was a problem for us, and I told them, "Not as long as it is painted soon, and the work on it doesn't drag on and on. If it's finished fast, it will be okay." I am pregnant, and when I got into the third trimester, I contacted the landlady to let her know they needed to begin work on the house. Her husband had told me it would take 8 weeks to paint it, and I only had 8 weeks left until my baby could come. They started about two weeks after this. She told me it should take 2-3 weeks, that her husband was wrong, and it would not take 8. Well, our landlord is a do-it-yourself type of guy, a terrible time manager as well, and he has some OCD tendencies. After a week and a half of noisy sanding and scraping, he seems to have fired the painting crew and is now sanding the ENTIRE HOUSE by himself, because no one can get it as perfect as he can. It's been almost three weeks, and he's not even finished sanding/scraping ONE wall of our home. I'm about three weeks from being full term, and the non-stop hammering noise is driving me insane. Our landlord is so slow, we feel that this project could take months. We have made it clear to them from the beginning that ANY work being done on our home when the baby is here is completely unacceptable. They agreed to this, but now it is looking like he may not finish in time. I'm very upset about this. For days, the landlord has been at our house alone, tinkering with the sanding and not getting anything done. I have no idea when the paint team will be back, or if they ever will be. It's just been a major source of stress-- largely because he is SO slow and cannot be trusted to get anything done.
